1. Staff changes

After five years (to the day!), Nan Buzard, the project manager is leaving the Sphere project to seek new challenges. Her last day is October 31. The new project manager, Alison Joyner, will begin her post in early October, allowing for a three-week overlap. Alison has spent nine years working for SCF, Oxfam and UNICEF in Sudan, Tibet and Sierra Leone. The talented remaining Sphere team members - Veronica Foubert and Elly Proudlock - will support Alison.

After four years of developing and managing the Sphere training programme, Sean Lowrie is now an independent consultant based in London. Sean can be reached at sean_lowrie@hotmail.com

As of 1 November, Nan can be reached at nan_buzard@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu

2. Management Committee changes

Over the last three years, Nancy Lindborg of Mercy Corps has provided strong and visionary leadership as the Sphere chair. Though she is cycling out of the chair position, she will remain on the Management Committee as an InterAction representative. Lola Gostelow, SCF-UK, is the new chair. Lola has been involved with Sphere since 1997 when she led the development of the original nutrition chapter of the Sphere handbook.

3. Handbook and film launch

The revised handbook will be ready for shipping as of 5 November. There will be official launches in Geneva and in Washington DC on Thursday, 30 October. The launches include brief presentations by handbook sector managers on the worldwide consulations, a short clip of the wonderful new orientation film “An Introduction to Humanitarian Challenges”, and a chance for the many folks involved with Sphere to share in this celebration. To order English copies of the 2004 edition (which includes a searchable CD) of the handbook (French and Spanish in January 2004) contact publish@oxfam.org.uk. The new 45-minute film is also available through Oxfam Publishing and can be purchased in VHS or DVD in English, French and Spanish (please note the DVD version contains the three languages).

4. Training news

The Sphere training materials are in the process of being published into a two-volume pack. A 100-page book outlining the how and why of Sphere workshops and a 400 page wire-bound book with all the four Sphere training modules and dozens of optional exercises. As with the handbook, all these materials are freely available on the Sphere website, or for sale through Oxfam Publishing. The French and Spanish publications will follow in 2004.

The next Sphere Training of Trainers will take place in Geneva from 25 January – 2 February 2004. Application information will soon be posted on the Sphere website and announced through this newsletter.

5. Evaluation update

Due to personal illness, the Sphere evaluation team delivery of their evaluation report is delayed by six weeks. It will be sent to the Sphere Management Committee in mid-November and subsequently made available on the Sphere website.
