Acute Respiratory Infections - 2006/06/06 20:59 Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are a leading global cause of mortality for children under five, particularly in emergency settings.

For this reason, ARI deserves more attention that it is currently receiving. Sphere could encourage greater attention by developing a set of indicators concerning prevention of and response to ARIs.

Easier said that done, I know. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts and beginning a dialogue on this important issue.

Re:Acute Respiratory Infections - 2006/06/15 10:06 I have sets of indicators that could be useful for this, including one on ARI. Was put together several (>5) years ago in WHO so some references in it may have revised versions by now. See attached file, explanation for the set is in file called introduction, and the one on ARI is A1-ari. I also assume lot of work on this can be found in the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses program.

An aspect for prevention of ARI seems to include reduction of 'indoor air pollution'. I found these briefing papers when looking into MDGs. Apparently an important risk factor for ARI, so could be part of prevention strategy. see http://www.who.int/indoorair/info/iabriefing1rev.pdf
and for suggested 'solutions' http://www.who.int/indoorair/publications/iabriefing3.pdf
