Helping people learn about Sphere - 2006/04/13 06:51 The Sphere project has developed training materials for running Sphere workshops, and regularly runs Training of Training courses. What is your experience of any of these events? What other ways of supporting people to learn about and use Sphere have you tried (perhaps on the job training, Sphere audit, planning using Sphere), and how did it go?

Re:Helping people learn about Sphere - 2006/04/13 21:33 Last year I conducted two participatory project audits with CARE, one in Zimbabwe and one in Ethiopia.

The principle is simple: ask the beneficiary whether the agency is meeting the Sphere standards.

The method is a bit more complex, as one needs to decide which indicators will inform the discussion, and one needs to determine the data collection method. We used about a dozen simultaneous focus groups, each one led by a project staff person. Not a very rigorous method, but good enough for a learning event.

By the way, important lessons emerge about the common standards, in particular how accountable the agency is. Participating staff may not be used to these types of conversations.
