ALNAP and ProVention consortium recently published a paper of lessons from responses to flooding in the expectation that it will prove useful to those who are involved in responding to the flooding in southern Africa.

The overall sales figures provided by Oxfam Publishing and Al Shorouk Publishing for the period of May 2005 – April 2007 show that promotion of Sphere materials, particularly the Handbook in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, has been successful, with a 42% increase in the value of sales between 2005-6 and 2006-7.

The Libyan Agency for Relief and Humanitarian Assistance (LIBAID) delivered a training on Sphere, the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response from 4th to 6th of December 2007. The training was lead by Mr. Mostafa Osman and Mr. Abdel Hamid El Madani.

In the bustling city of Bangkok in early December, Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS-P/A) hosted a successful regional monitoring and evaluation Sphere training with 31 participants representing nine countries.

CWS-P/A is well known for its trainings in Pakistan ranging from disaster response to capacity building. As a landmark event, CWS-P/A conducted a workshop entitled, ‘Monitoring and Evaluation with a Particular Emphasis on Sphere Minimum Standards.’

El Proyecto Esfera firmó un Memorando de Entendimiento con Books for Change en la India con miras a la publicación de una versión inglesa de bajo costo de la edición de 2004 del Manual Esfera. El Manual se ha publicado en la India y se puede adquirir por 210 rupias indias* en los siguientes países únicamente: India, Bangladesh, Pakistán, Afganistán, Bután, Nepal, Sri Lanka y Maldivas (territorios de ventas).

En respuesta a la creciente demanda relacionada con el fortalecimiento de capacidades, la aprendizaje electrónico constituye una forma fiable de incrementar la oferta formativa para los distintos grupos de trabajadores humanitarios. RedR India, en colaboración con el Proyecto Esfera, lanzó una iniciativa encaminada a crear una herramienta de aprendizaje electrónico denominada “Esfera en la práctica humanitaria”, con la que se espera fomentar el uso del Manual Esfera como instrumento o sistema de ayuda para la toma de decisiones por parte de distintos actores.

Haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de adoptar un enfoque humanitario en situaciones de desastre, se ofreció una conferencia pública sobre “las normas de respuesta humanitaria” en el Centro Jamsetji Tata para la Gestión de Desastres de Mumbai (India) el martes 23 de octubre de 2007, a cargo de representantes de la Mesa Directiva y de la Oficina del Proyecto Esfera: Ton van Zutphen, Linda Poteat, el Dr. Unnikrishnan, Hani Eskandar y la Profesora Janki Andharia, Presidenta del Centro Jamsetji Tata para la Gestión de Desastres.
