Humanitarian agencies have been providing support to the disaster affected people in different zones of Somalia due to which there is a relevance of Sphere principles, humanitarian charter, common and minimum standards. For wider understanding and compliance of Sphere, it is important to translate the Handbook and the training materials in Somali.
There have been at least two meetings attended by the several NGOs and UN agencies working in Puntland to probe the best way to go forward in translating the Sphere handbook into Somali. In these meetings it was agreed that a committee composed of mother-tongue “humanitarians” from different agencies working in the country to meet in order to agree on terminology, key terms and concepts and on the translation process.
The role of the steering committee
The role of the committee and their respective agencies/NGOs will be to: - Provide guidance and support in the Sphere translation process.
- Identify key terms in the Sphere Handbook and training materials and translate them in the humanitarian context in Somalia.
- Review translated Handbook and training materials and provide feedback and suggestions to the translator.
- Approve the final translated document.
- Test training materials and provide feedback.
- Pool financial resources for the translation.
- Disseminate translated handbook and utilize the resources.
