All In Diary: a practical tool for field-based humanitarian workers Convertir en PDF Version imprimable
30-07-2007
The All In Diary is a practical tool for field-based humanitarian workers and aims to improve the quality of emergency relief operations.  A 6 month trial is currently underway – if you would like to be involved in this trial, please see the contact details below.

What is there a need for this:

The quality of relief directly affects the well being and recovery of those affected by disaster.  However, recent evaluations indicate significant room for improvement.  Factors contributing to inappropriate relief include:
  • poorly prepared and inexperienced international and local NGO staff
  • limited access to relevant and timely information and resources for those working in the field
  • lack of information to support engagement and build capacity of those affected by the disaster

How can the All In Diary help:

Providing the staff of international and local NGOs with an All In Diary which includes practical and succinct information we can improve the quality of relief and recovery through:

  • improved use of internationally recognised standards and codes of conduct
  • easy and timely access to key resources and guidelines on good humanitarian practice
  • valuable real-time learning and programme continuity through diarised records of decisions, interactions, activities and events

International and local NGOs have critical, mutually dependent roles to play in humanitarian relief - relying on collaborative working and equitable access to resources and information. Without this they risk operating in isolation and relative ignorance, failing to learn from each other or from good practice within the sector. This project will play an important role in bringing them together ‘on the same page’.

Why is there a need for this:

There is already a wealth of information, resources and guidelines aimed at improving the quality of relief efforts; much of it scattered throughout the internet.  However, recent research has shown that there is a need for information which is:
  • relevant to the local context and specific disaster
  • providing easy-to-action guidelines
  • portable and readily accessible to all those working at field level
  • easily translated into local languages

What does it include:

In response to the above, this project has developed:
  • a personal organiser (Filofax) containing a 6 month diary plus succinct reference information on 50 topics covering: including 5 pages relating to Sphere Charter and Minimum Standards
    o Principles of humanitarian practice
    o International standards
    o Managing people and projects
    o Working with communities
  • a CD providing supplementary practical tools and resources for each topic, including the Sphere Handbook
  • a website (www.allindiary.org)  providing downloadable formats and up-to-date links to further resources.

The All In Diary will be launched in July 2007 on a 6 month trial. If you, or your organisation, would like to be involved in this trial, the diaries can be purchased at a subsidised cost of £10 plus post and packing.
