The overall sales figures provided by Oxfam Publishing and Al Shorouk Publishing for the period of May 2005 – April 2007 show that promotion of Sphere materials, particularly the Handbook in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, has been successful, with a 42% increase in the value of sales between 2005-6 and 2006-7.
Sales of all Sphere available materials (handbook, DVD, training pack) in 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian) in GBP were: from May 2005 – April 2006
| 39,011 £

In general, there have been a total of 17,173 handbooks sold during this period, of which just over 11,000 were in English. According to these figures, just over 1,600 copies were sold in each of Spanish and French. However it should be noted that lowcost reprints of the Handbook in Spanish in Latin America account for a further several thousand. Arabic sales for the period were 2,150, and this is before the ToT in Arabic in June 2007.
Sales of the French edition of the handbook increased by almost 300% and those of the Spanish handbook (although as indicated above, only those sold by Oxfam Publishing) by 600%. This suggests the effectiveness of the promotion of these materials through Sphere Training of Trainers (ToTs) courses in 2006.
Western Europe remains the source of the largest number of purchases of Sphere materials, with 59% of the total. North America comes second with 20%. On the other hand, all regions of Africa combined represent 11% of sales, and the combined Asia Pacific region, 10%. The figure for Africa may well reflect the French ToT in Dakar, Senegal in November 2006. The figure for Asia Pacific probably reflects the effect of the Asian Tsunami in late 2005, and possibly a ToT in Singapore in October 2006. The low figure for central and south America reflects again the fact that most handbooks used there are produced locally.
The 2004 edition of the Sphere handbook now exists in 4 ‘official’ translations, sponsored by the Sphere Project – French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic – and 12 other ‘spontaneous’ translations, organised and funded by Sphere users. These languages are Dari, Farsi, Japanese, Oriya, Vietnamese, Nepali, Sinhala, Urdu, Chinese, Bahasa, Malayalam and Tamil. Full details, and the electronic versions of most of these versions, are available on the Sphere website.
