Trocaire organized its first Sphere and Good enough Guide training for the Horn and Eastern Africa region funded by Irish Aid Rapid Response Initiative in Lukenya Gateway Athi-River, Kenya from 20 to 24 April 2009. Steve Mutiso/Trocaire Livelihoods PO and Astrid de Valon, who had attended the Sphere training of trainers in Malawi, had invited 26 Trocaire and Cafod partners that had been involved in emergency interventions since 2007, in addition to 7 Trocaire Program Officers from the Region (two from Sudan, one from Somalia, one from Ethiopia, one from Uganda and two from the Region) and 3 Cafod staff. The training was very much appreciated according to participants' evaluation "well above expectations". It also was a good platform to exchange experiences and reinforce the networking at regional level. Participants came from Erithrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.
Included in the training was a field visit in Nairobi slum of Kibera to have all regional partners trained on the pilot project called Garden in a sack led by one of the partners: Solidarites for the urban poors. It is hoped that partners will now replicate the initiative in their locations. There was also a presentation done by Cafod on how to take pictures, how to deal with media, and how to write stories of change.
Detailed training plans are available on request. Please contact for more information: Astrid de Valon Regional Humanitarian Programme Officer Trocaire East Africa Regional Office Tel: + 254 72 62 16 257 email :
