The Sphere Project appoints Communications Officer

The newly created position is focused, in the short-term, on resourcing and coordinating the communication strategy for several launch events of the Sphere Handbook 2011 edition to take place around the world during the second quarter of the year, while at the same time conducting a major revamping of the Sphere website. The position is supported by the Sphere Strategy 2015 and the Sphere 2010-2012 program.

Juan Michel brings to the Sphere team extensive experience in developing and implementing public information and media relations strategies as well as in news and web writing. Most of his career has been in the non-for-profit sector, working with religious institutions and ecumenical organizations. He has been a magazine editor, a news writer and most recently the Media Relations Officer of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches. Juan has worked as a communicator at major international conferences and events and reported from field missions. He is from Argentina and holds an MA in Communications, Media and Public Relations from the University of Leicester, UK.

“We warmly welcome Juan to the Sphere team”, said John Damerell, the Sphere Project Manager. “By identifying the need for this new position within the small Geneva-based staff, the Sphere Project Board has made a decision that strengthens Sphere as one of the leading initiatives promoting quality and accountability in humanitarian response in the 21st century”, he added.

Juan Michel can be reached by email or by phone at +41 76 307 5877.

The Sphere Project is a unique voluntary initiative reflecting the collective will and shared experience of a broad array of humanitarian actors. It aims to improve the quality of assistance to people affected by disasters and the accountability of states and humanitarian agencies to their constituents, donors and affected populations.
