Sphere e-learning course now available in four languages
29 August 2013 |
With the addition of Arabic, French and Spanish versions, the Sphere Handbook in Action e-learning course is now accessible to a wider spectrum of the Sphere community.
The Sphere Handbook in Action aims to increase the understanding and effective use of the Sphere Handbook, Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response. To achieve that, it allows humanitarian workers to undertake an ambitious training programme on Sphere principles and standards in an autonomous manner via the Internet.
Since its launch in English last February, the course has reached over 4,500 learners. "We are very happy about this success, which shows that the course responds to a demand within the sector," says Verónica Foubert, responsible for Training and Learning Management at the Sphere Project office. "We hope the new language versions will help further disseminate Sphere principles and standards."
The course brings the Handbook to life through the use of realistic scenarios, helping the learner to get acquainted with its core messages and to understand how to use it holistically. Taking the course is free of charge.
Among the key aspects of humanitarian work explored by the course are: accountability to affected populations, needs assessment, impartiality, keeping populations safe from harm and looking after oneself as a humanitarian worker.
Designed to be an integral part of core learning for humanitarian staff, the course is complementary to traditional training methods like workshops. Each person may take the course at her or his own pace. Learners need to invest between 15 and 20 hours to complete it.
A DVD version of the course, aimed at people with slow or no connectivity to the Internet, is available upon request.
