The Sphere e-learning course will be complementary to traditional training methods like workshops. It will allow humanitarian workers and volunteers to learn through an interactive experience. Taking the course will be free of charge.

The learning design is based on complex and challenging scenarios and dilemmas that humanitarian workers typically face in the field. Each person may take the course at her or his own pace.

The course aims to increase the understanding and effective use of the Sphere Handbook. It seeks to bring the Handbook to life through the use of real-life scenarios, helping the learner to get acquainted with its core messages and to understand how to use it holistically.

“We believe this course should be an integral part of core learning for anyone involved in humanitarian work,” says Verónica Foubert, responsible for Training and Learning Management at the Sphere Project office.

Among the key aspects of humanitarian work explored by the course are: accountability to affected populations, needs assessment, impartiality, keeping populations safe from harm and looking after oneself as a humanitarian worker.

“We invite organizations that would like to explore how to incorporate the course into their staff development curricula to contact us,” Foubert adds.

The launch of the course will take place through a series of presentations in different venues during the first quarter of 2013.
