Sphere activities in Afghanistan
A. Aim (objectives)
The Sphere Extension Services for Afghanistan (SESA)
project aims to improve the assessment, analysis, design and delivery
of humanitarian projects by NGOs, UN agencies, Government and other
humanitarian actors through better understanding of the Sphere Project
approaches and guidance.
To enhance understanding of the Humanitarian Charter
and the Minimum Standards in Disaster response among, the humanitarian
actors.
B. Activities
1) The SESA team has conducted 14 Sphere project
Introductory workshops in 2003 which participated by 242 people. (National
and international NGOs, UN Agencies, Government related deportments)
2) In 2004 the team has conducted 12 workshops
so far and will conduct few more till end of the year. The number of
participants for this year was 242. The team also has conducted sphere
clinics, and individual meetings with NGOs and Governmental deportments.
3) The training material was translated
into national language by the SESA team members.
4) The first edition of the Sphere Project handbook
translated into Dari (national language) 1,000 copies published.
5) The first edition of Sphere Project handbook was translated into
Pushtu (spoken at the border of Pakistan and most part of Afghanistan)
by Mercy Corps in Quetta, Pakistan and the SESA team was let to make
copies to be used inside Afghanistan. (1,000)
6) The 2004 edition has been translated into Dari and 700 copies published.
C. Key Messages
1) The team has been asked to establish an authorized
group of organizations to follow up the application among the Humanitarian
actors; the Group should be authorized/ able to find out why they have
not applied the Minimum Standards and indicators in their projects and
make them to apply the MS.
2) The project has been welcomed by the entire provincial Governor in
which the workshops have been conducted so far.
